Is there a risk of transplant patients traveling abroad? Is it a good idea to obtain Medical Travel Insurance in case there are problems on the trip. I am not sure if Asian hospitals would accept my Health Insurance. What do you guys know about the risk? We may be in Asia for a month. What concerns would you have for a trip like this? Any tips or advice welcome.

I wanted to go to Haiti and help with the University of Miami.............. Transplant said no I shouldn't go there I didn't think of all disease only wounds and broken bones etc. That country is so poor none are vaccinated for much of anything.... I really wanted to go and help...... But, I sent my donation and pray for those people everyday!!! A little off the subject............

Honestly, if you traveling to Asia you want travel insurance, transplant or no transplant, it's not so much about getting covered by insurance, more personally I wouldn't really want to be treated at any hospital in Asia outside of Japan, perhaps Singapore, and maybe South Korea, travel insurance will pay for emergency transport back to the US.. First you'd need to check with your transplant doc about Malaria vaccine, I think it's pretty important for Asia. Also, I'd be worried about food. Transplants have issues with shellfish, among other things and in my experience a lot of Asia has trouble with the idea of dietary restrictions, heck I think that vegetarian diet is tough, let alone, cooked well and no shellfish, among other things. Beyond that, I can't really think of anything, other than that. Maybe bring some extra hand sanitizer since Asia can be pretty dirty.

Hi Cindy,

From passed experience I have always been advised to ensure that I have adequate travel insurance, adequate to ensure that I would be able to receive ANY treatment I many have needed. Luckily I never did require treatment, but I have always been the type of person who likes to play it safe.

Speak to your travel company or whomever you book your holiday with, explain your situation and where you are travelling to and they will be able to point you in the right direction, they may even recommend a good insurance company for you to obtain a quote from.

Hope this helps?

Best wishes,

Paul
