Regular readers of my blog will know that the weight has been a 'large problem' (pardon the pun) for a while now. The reduction in the steroid Prednisolone has helped a great deal, enabling me to drop from 19st 10lbs down to 17st 3lbs.
However I had noticed that I seemed to stop, level out if you like, around the 17st 3lbs mark. Needless to say it was really bugging me and I even went to my GP and was prescribed Orlistat (Weight-loss pill) to try and help - it was regrettably futile, my weight remained around the 17st mark grrr!
Now, as it would seem, my old friend the 'Fluid' had been returning. I had noticed my abdoman becoming distended once again and once again I was suffering with abdominal discomfort. I did have scans, but all returned negative, until the abdominal pains got so bad I was admitted to hospital (see my previous blog post).
It appears the fluid was being stored on my liver, why? I wish I knew - even the Drs were puzzled, but they did say that fluid can hide in the most unlikely of places!
They tried the old-fashioned method of removing the fluid, using IV Frusomide, but that seemed to have no impact. I was measuring my own output, so I knew exactly what was going in and what was coming out - apologies for the bleak description!
But the good old Metolozone came to my rescue - just 1/2 a tablet (2.5mg), and I shed 6.5 to 7 litres of fluid over two days!!!!
I have been told that there remains another 1, possibly 2, kilos of fluid remaining so I am to carry on as normal and I have to go back to my Doctor on the 24th - plus I have to be sure my kidney function remains stable.
So, I now weigh in at 16st 6lbs (104.3kg). I guess the fluid was building up and cancelling out my weight-loss?
N.B. As a footnote - I received a letter from Birmingham on Friday 5th March (My parents bought my mail into hospital!) It appears they are willing to accept me onto their transplant scheme - I am still to contact them to confirm the contents of the letter, but it looks to be genuine. They have put down two conditions that I need to meet:
1. My kidney function remains stable
2. My weight drops to 90kg (although I want to get down to 80kg ideally - personal preference)
