Recipients: In This Space, Feel Free To Write About Those You Are Grateful to for Receiving The Gift Of Life:
I have so many people to thank for being here today that I would need another website like this one just for them. So, I'll keep it simple:

TransplantCafe.com is dedicated to:

1. My mom, dad, uncle, brother and Kari without whom I would not have lived through the rough times after transplantation.

2. Dr. Imagawa at UCI Medical Center and the entire 1998 Liver Transplant Team who became and will always be family and without whom I (or my mom) wouldn't have lived through surgery.

3. All donors; living donors, those who register with their state, or country as donors and those who think life for someone else they have never met, when the life of their loved one is taken away.

4. My donors Jack and Ruth for the gift of life at a time when life was taken from them with the sudden death of their son Gary.

5. To you, the transplant recipient for being a great example of the human will to live and showing the world how successful transplantation can be.

6. Lastly, to the world itself which still needs our help to change it's attitude towards donation.

About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about you and your unique experience with transplantation:
My name is Nelson. I'm a Liver transplant recipient since 1998. I had to have an emergency life saving liver transplant after I had been prescribed a thyroid medication (by a well meaning doctor) to which I had an allergic reaction causing me fulminate liver failure.

My experience with transplantation was a bit different than with most recipients who unfortunately have to wait a long time to receive their transplant. I had no idea I needed a transplant until after I woke up with a new liver. It was a weird feeling suddenly waking up into a whole new paradigm without prior knowledge of needing a transplant until after transplantation.

Transplantation has brought me a lot of amazing experiences and friendships that I would not want to be without today if it meant not having ever had my transplant. Having a transplant has allowed me to see great places like France for the World Transplant Games in 2003 and many US cities with the US Transplant Games, with more games and travel on the horizon.

It was those experiences and friendships that inspired TransplantCafe.com. It was an idea that evolved from a simple thought to author some sort of "fun things having a transplant will allow you to do more of or faster" type of manual or book. Being an Internet marketer, it was easy to see that "web2.0" and user generated content social networking would serve the transplant community much more.

I hope you'll enjoy the site and make TransplantCafe.com your new home to connect and share your experience with the transplant community and the world!

A man who has made it his life mission to raise awareness about organ donation is returning to Keck Hospital of USC, where, 10 years ago, he received a life-saving lung transplant. And when he comes April 5, Bill Widen will bring with him his Donate Life car. Widen drives the…

New York is facing a crisis - Nearly 10,000 New Yorkers are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 7:50am 1 Comment

NY is facing a crisis. Nearly 10,000 New Yorkers are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. However, only 19% of the adult population is enrolled to be an organ donor (as compared to the national average of 43%).  As a result, every 15 hours, another New Yorker dies waiting for an organ.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Did you know that just one organ donor alone can save up to eight lives? If you think about this in terms of the typical family, the number eight…

Science Fiction and the Evolution of Transplantation..

Since the beginning of modern organ and tissue transplantation those of us who have ever needed a transplant or currently need one, have relied on mainly two different factors to receive our life saving gifts.

These are the selfless generosity of a grieving family that has lost a loved one and who must make the decision to give just hours and sometimes only minutes into their…

When I had my breathing tube removed the FIRST words out of my mouth were,"WHO the F**K do you mother-F***ers thin you are?!!?!?!"

Before my Tx I was very meek-manared and quiet. But this "new" me was not "me". I never cussed at alll splaeon a "M-F" is ot something  would feel comfortable with; yet the words flowed off my tongue as if I'd been driving a truch for decades now! AND I was not embarrassed at all!!

I think this was from "cell-memory"; memories from the doner who was liberal with his loose tongue! After weeks of abuse and after-thought I HAD to apologize to my doctors and nurses for my uncommon behavior and vocabulary!!!!

I do believe in "cell=memory" as many other unusual things have happened that normally would NOT have happened during "MY" life!!!!!!
