About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes at the age of three. My parents brought me up as "normal" as any other kid except for the fact that I had to take insulin injections, check my blood sugars (back then it was my urine that I had to test), and watched what I ate.
I grew up being very active in sports to help me be in shape but also to maintain my blood sugars. I learned at an early age that having a good attitude toward any situation, no matter how bad, would help me get through it.
At the age of 19 I had a kidney biopsy done to look at my kidney function; my parents and I were told by my Nephrologists that I had a little proteinuria and that since I had diabetes for 16 years that I would not live to the age of 23. My parents and I were devastated, but I wasn’t going to let that get us down. I continued to live as “normal” as possible, staying active, and keeping my head up.
Fast forward to 2003 time frame (bare in mind that I’m still alive). Now, having diabetes for 26 some odd years, I have come to a juncture where I cannot feel when my blood sugars are getting dangerously low. My Nephrologists (not the same one previously mentioned) felt that I would be a “prime” candidate for a pancreas transplant. Why a pancreas only transplant and not a kidney as well you might ask? Well, it turns out that I was in greater need of a pancreas only transplant and having it would reverse any adverse affects that might have occurred in my kidneys. I was placed on the waiting list on January 23, 2003.
I was at work when I received the call on Ash Wednesday February 26, 2004 at 2:45 p.m. I heard my name being paged stating that I had a phone call; I was on my way to another building and would just get the message later; then I thought, I better get this call. It was my transplant coordinator stating that a pancreas had become available. A whirlwind of emotions came over me and I accepted. Next, I called Medflight, (I forgot to mention that I live in New Mexico and the transplant was going to take place in Loma Linda, California) they told me that I needed to be there by 6:00 p.m.; the only major airport is 1.5 hours away from where I live and I still needed to get home from work to pick up my wife and parents. I then called my wife and parents and told them this wasn’t a drill, this was the real deal. My dad had to drive us to the airport because I was just too nervous. With traffic and the distance we had to travel we didn’t get to the airport until 7:00 p.m. The medical staff loaded my mom, my wife, and myself but didn’t have room for my dad; my dad decided to take the earliest flight the next morning. As we were heading down the runway I looked out the window to see my dad waving good bye to us, this totally broke my heart.
When we landed in Loma Linda we were taken the Transplant Institute and checked in. I was started on I.V.’s and had my last insulin injection at 10:10 p.m. that night. I had a lot of emotions running through me. Mid-night rolled around and I was carried off to the operating room. As I was going down the hall, I would nervously look at the lights above with my wife and mom by my side. When it was time for me to go through the double doors into the operating room I kissed my wife and mom and told them to keep their heads up. As soon as I went through the double doors, the extreme emotions that I had completely left me, I was calm in a sub-due state.
The next day when I awoke I felt brand new. I stayed close to the hospital after the transplant for 49 days. Since my mom is retired she stayed with me for the duration while my wife and dad would fly out to visit us periodically.
I am now 34 years old, still alive, and feeling better than ever thanks to my donor and donor family.
