I am waiting for clearance for a kidney transplant. My husband is going to be my living donor.
I am very apprehensive because the follow-up seems so incredibly overwhelming. Also, the
side effects of the drugs sound terrible. I was told that they raise your risk of getting cancer to
30 - 40%. I am a cancer survivor of 25 years, so this scares the hell out of me. But, my other choice is dialysis and I have heard horror stories about that.
Finding this sight, and getting all the positive feedback, has been wonderful! I finally feel that there are others who really do know how I feel. Thanks to everyone who helps me through this difficult time...

Hi Pam,
Just reading your bio-story and not sure how far along you are in your endeavor but I recently went thru the whole process at UW and truthfully, its not that bad as it seems. One step at a time! I was fortunate enuf to only be on dialysis for 2 months but I pray I never have to endure that again. The fatigue for 24 hours after was beyond explanation.Once you sleep it off you feel great for a day before you have to go back again.
The drugs are bad for sure but the secret for me has been an abundance of water and plenty of excercise.Having had cancer previously,I can imagine its a scary thought to put yourself at risk like that.We must all live our lives now being cautious of all things that invite disease and sickness and well,ya just never know whats waiting around the bend but my vote would lean towards going for it and living life to the fullest for as long as the good Lord lets you.One day at a time and one battle at a time!

Pam hi,

My 1st tx was a kidney/pancreas at UCSF (San Francisco) in 1990 and I had to have a biopsy on my kidney and a 350-1 odds this would happen the biopsy needle hit an artery & a vien and they had to put a platinum coild in my tx kidney! Yikes yes but that was really a rare deal I guess I was #350...so my 1st tx kidney never had a chance as it was injured and I needed another kidney tx 2 1/2 years later...So on Aug 6, 1992 my wife nancy donated 1 of her kidney's to me!:) Nancy's kidney really worked well but suffered to a toxcity in cyclosporin (back in those days they didn't have alot of anti-rejection meds to choose from) but nancy's kidney hung in there for 17 years! In July of 08 my pancreas failed after 18 1/2 years and Nancy's kidney was on its way out too<>why did this all happen? Who knows? Why do some transplants last 30-40 years and some only 1 day I can't answer that either~~~but I do know transplants work! and thank God we have that option:) So for me I have done really well~~~the amazing thing is even though I am on my 3rd tx as I recieved a kidney/pancreas on Aug 4, 2009 at UW (univ wisconsin-madison) and am doing great! Another thing I am thankful for in all my transplants is that I have maintained really good health:)

God bless you Pam and anything I can do to help just drop me a line Ok :) Tracy

Pam, you will not regret having the transplant.I had mine kidney transplant 3 yrs ago in March, and I have done very well.Yes I had complication the first 6 months and had a blood infection to deal with, but after that, I have done so well.I feel good, and I cannot thank my donor enough,it was sad for him to loose his life for me to receive it, but you know I feel so special for him to feel greatful enough to want to share his organs with others to keep them alove.I met the family a year later and it was wonderful. Its something you never ever get out of your mind I am alive today because of my donor, what better gift could anyone give. Life. Good Luck and don't worry things might be a little tuff at first but its all worth it.My Prayers are with you.

Hi Pam,
My name is Holly and I live in Southern California. I will be celebrating 10 years (kidney) in 2010. I was lucky - my cousin donated her kidney to me. And, I was only on dialsis for 3 months. I understand your fears and the information can be very overwhelming. Hang in there!!
