We LOVE our Donors! Are you a donor who has given the Gift of Life? How?
Gave the Gift of Life by donating a Loved One's Organs
Optional for those who donated their Loved One's organs, tissue, or both: in this space, feel free to write anything you want about your Loved One and your experience as a donor:
In March 1999, my baby sister and best friend, Sharon Anne Stout, died from a fatal head wound at the age of 19. She was a San Francisco native that graduated from Sacred Heart Cathedral with honors and had great dreams of becoming a teacher. A loving individual, she was always helping others. It was no surprise that she would want to do so even in her time of death. She declared only months before her accident, that she would want to be an organ donor if anything ever happened to her. Knowing her wishes made making the decision to donate that much easier when our family was approached by a Transplant Coordinator. Knowing that Sharon's injury would be fatal has been extremely painful, but her gifts of life continue to touch those that never had the chance to know her. She has taught us all that life is not about material gain, but what we learn from our experiences and what we give. Her choice to donate was the catalyst for my involvement with the transplant community. Although I lost my sister and best friend, it is through her acts of kindness that I have been introduced to a world of transplant recipients and donors I now call family. With no words at all, we share a common bond - an understanding of what true love is.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to participate in the US Transplant Games for the past nine years. Representing Team NorCal as their Donor Family Liaison and also representing the National Kidney Foundation as a Donor Family Mentor. My involvement with everyone through the Games has had a profound effect on my healing process from grief. I am in awe by all those I've met afflicted with organ failure and their will to live, perseverance to overcome adversity and gratitude towards the donor families that allowed them a greater opportunity to fulfill their dreams. My heros are those transplant recipients, for they have given me the strength to carry on in a world without my sister. My comfort comes from their loving support and the comfort of those donor families like myself.
