Double Lung
If you are on the transplant waiting list, please use this space to write about your experience:
When I was waiting for my first transplant, I waited a total of three years, nine months, and two days.
My first call was when I was in 6th grade. I was at school. We were put on hold for the longest time. I didn't get the lungs, the person ahead of me got the instead.
The second call I got was a few months later, but I was unable to except the lungs because i was just getting over a cold.
The third call came and we all thought "Third times the charm," guess not. It was on Easter we got the call saying they had lungs just as we pulled the Easter ham out of the oven. DARN. They told me not to eat or drink anything. I got to the hospital and was intubated and was ready to recieve my lungs but was scared as hell. I had no idea what was going to happen. A few hours later I came out and the doctors told my mom that they did not do the transplant because the lungs had a bruise on them that none of the tests showed. WORST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!
Well I guess fourth times is the real charm because on March 6th 2007 we got the real call at 4:30 in the morning.
The wait was crazy. to be honest it was scary too. I waited more than the average person waits for their lungs. I started to lose faith during the end and was wondering if it wpuld ever happen. Was i going to live past 12 years old? In the end it was totally worth it.
I am waiting for another double lung transplant currently. It is a little easier to process this time, seeming i have already been through it once. But it is also a little discouraging knowing that I waited almost four years for my first one. I don't have the highest sense of omtimisim for this wait. I don't think I am going to last another four years.
At this point I have put my life in the hands of God. All I can do now is sit, wait, and pray.
What do you do for a living?
I breathe....alot :)
About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
My experience with transplantation has been a little crazy. I waited almost four years to recieve my first transplant and I am currently awaiting another double lung transplant. My first has lasted me two years and hopefully can make it through the wait I have ahead. Transplantation has been such a miracle for me. Before I got my lungs I had so many limits to my life. I couldn't take a shower without help, I had to sometimes be carried up the stairs. I could play sports with my friends or any activity. I couldn't take gym class. Going to school took up all of my energy. My life was basically: go to school then come home and sleep. After my transplant i was able to do all of those things ( to a certain limit). I was able to tell who my real friends were. I had an appetite. I am currently going through chronic rejection and am waiting. I am scared. I am only fifteen and wake up every day wondering about how long I have left on this world until I move onto the next. I was on oxygen for almost seven years before my transplant. I was so relieved to be off of it. I recently went back on and was very nervous because it made things set in and made it more of a physical apperance that reminds me everyday what I am going through. But with the help of God I slowly get through each day. I am very thankful thank I have such amazing friends that care so much about me and treat me like I am a normal person. They are the ones that are there for me when i need it.
Transplantation has its ups and downs but in the end it was definitly worth it and I hope that my story tells people something helpful to make them want to be an organ donor.

Depression?

Has anyone here ever been depressed? What are some of the signs of depression? How do you know if you are depressed? I have just been feeling unusually sad and want to cry for no reason at all sometimes. What does that mean? If I am depressed, what should I do? I am just really confused and wondering if there is anybody that could help figure things out a little.

Clinic in Boston

Just thought I would give everyone an update.

I went to Boston today and I am still here. My FEV1 was 8% which is 2% down from what it was 2 weeks ago. The team and I decided that I should stay for a little "tune-up", just to maybe help me gain some of the weight back that I have lost throughout the whole regection process. I will also have a chance to talk to a phycologist (sp?) to help me sort out all of the feeling I have been overwhelmed with. I will also get the chance to see someone from… Continue

Hi Audrey. We have a little bit in common. We both had to get new lungs due to cf at a young age. I will be praying for you that you don't have to wait 4 years this time. I was very lucky and was only on the list for just under 3 months. But I was very, very sick. I wouldn't have lasted a few more weeks if I wouldn't have gotten the lungs when I did. I have been very blessed with the last 17 1/2 years that I have so far gotten with these lungs. If you every have questions or want to talk send me a messge. ~Tara :-)

I sure hate to hear what you are going through. I was on the waiting list almost 3 years to get my liver and the wait is very hard. They move you to the top of the national list when your transplant fails so I don,t think you will have to wait that long. I will keep you in my prayers and I believe God has some big plans in store for you so just let go and let God. In the end every thing will be OK and if its not OK its not the end,

Audrey, you are no longer alone in your journey. There are several of us here who will be here for you. I guess you can call me an outsider as I am not the one who actually went through transplant, my daughter is, but we go through the journey together, I just don't physically feel it and live it.
