I will prayer for you to be accepted into the program at Duke. It's a great place. You may need the stomach wrap (fundiplication) like I did with bad esophageal reflux. It is supposed to help prevent reflux from getting in our new lungs. Not a fun s…

About Me: Please use this space to tell the community about yourself and your unique experience with transplantation:
I am a double lung transplant recipient. I was diagnosed at 2 with Cystic Fibrosis and my parents were told my life expectancy was 8. I stayed pretty healthy until I got into my 30's and started having lots of lung infections and a gradual drop in my lung function. At age 36 my lung function was down to 30% and they said my only alternative was a double-lung transplant so I became active on the donor registry. I recieved my new lungs 3 months after being active. My lung function had dropped all the way to 13% and I was pretty much living in the hospital on antibiotic IV's and breathing O2 24/7. I had a good transplant experience and was only in the hospital 8 days. I came off the ventilator within 5 hours of surgery. The first thing family and friends noticed was my skin was pink again. I did outpatient rehab for a month after surgery and currently swim 3-4 x week. I've had "speed bumps" along the way and have chronic rejection but remain physically active and have good quality of life. I don't complain knowing the alternative. I am so grateful to my donor and his family. I try to show my gratitude in everything I do and that is why I am swimming now. I swim for my donor. I am currently involved with the NC Lung Transplant Foundation that raises money for education and research for chronic rejection.

Hi, Amy. My daughter received her tx at 6 mos. old. She is now 9. How are you doing now? Rachel was diagnosed with chronic rejection 4 years ago. She had reflux going into her lungs, so they performed a fundoplication/Nissen. She is doing well at the moment, but, of course, her diagnosis of bronchiolitis obliterans remains. It's wonderful to see that you are so physically active. I'd love to learn more about you, as we belong to a very small lung tx program in Boston and know almost no one else who has had a double lung tx. Hope to hear from you soon, Stacey

Hi Amy
I spent some time in Richmond workinf on the games at the state fair round about 1980 and my wife,Mig and myself worked in a shopping mall in Fairmount, West Virgina. We had a stand selling toy cars for 6 weeks leading up to Christmas in1984,sugar that's 25 years ago,OMG!

Glad to hear your back in the water. We had our Ulsters masters competition last Saturday.I wore my new fast-suit,brilliant,had to take some ribbing though. One of our swimmers didn't show and I swam the 50m breaststroke in his place.I set a new Ulster record, lol, was 41.09 and I did 41.02.....just made it!But couldn't claim it because I swam as the other guy, another time!

Hope you are well.

Sorry I just realized there is a button for kidney tx only and I selected the wrong one. I haven't had a pancreas just kidney. They gave me the option of the pancreas when I had to go through the kidney but I declined it. Glad to hear you are doing so well!
