Hi Paul,
Being veggie certainly suited me, but if you have to have the protein from meat, then white meat such as chicken and fish would be excellent. I've grown to love my cheek bones and jawline after being without for so long, and will miss them whenever I do have an eventual transplant. At lest the pred doese are less these days so the chipmunk cheeks aren't so pronounced as they used to be, but it's still a pain.

In response to Catherine, we cannot all go vegetarian due to the nature of our transplant, nor can we come off Prednisolone completely.

I have been on Pred for almost 24 years now, the body - from a cardiac transplantee's point of view - is reliant upon the Pred to protect against infection of the lungs, afterall if they were to become infected, where would be the first place the infection would spread to - yes, the heart.

Vegetarianism is not an option for Cardiac patients either, the heart is a muscle and therefore requires countless types of proteins in order to protect itself, most of which supplements cannot provide yet meat can - my advice therefore would be to eat more white meat (chicken, fish, etc.

Your body adapts to the Pred, yes it does take a long time, but it does eventually happen. The 'moon' face does go and one's general well-being returns. The downside is that long term Pred treatment causes Osteoporosis and the body is no longer able to cope without it either.

Congrats on your new heart Aoife, 1 year, that is fantastic, will you be celebrating?

I'm been off the dreaded pred for a few years and lost my round face - praise the Lord! - but some advice I can give about the diet is to switch to wholemeal flour sugar in g=fact everyrhing! And go veggie at the same time. It's a healthy diet and if you exercise as well i.e cycling so there's a point to it as I did, the weight will fall off. I managed to lose a stone in a month without trying simply by following such a healthy diet and avoiding white sugar products.
Hope this helps,
Catherinex

To be honest, its important to eat healthy with it to offset the possible medically induced diabetes but even taking diruectics some ppl will still suffer with a moon face.

Hi Racheal-The best advice I can give you is when you are up to it to see a dietician. She helped me out and I even lost three pounds the healthy way. It's good to see one if you can anyhow as your diet needs have changed. Congratulations and best wishes!

my creatine number is creeping up so they are afraid my transplant is failing..As much as i dont like prednisone I am content to stay on it and even increase it if it means i keep my kidney..it has been 24 yrs. since my transplant.

I love to swim. When given the opportunity, I'm in the water daily. What about fragrances? Which ones do you really like? ( I love freesias and the smell of bread baking)
