This is a group for all people who have had liver transplants. Feel free to say how long you have been a recipient and what medication you are on. Some doctors hope to have their patients off all medications, any thoughts?

Comment by Penny on June 14, 2012 at 5:14pm These thyroid and vision problems are small sacrifices for still being alive. It can all be treated. I've been on steroid drops for my left eye, and they gave me a shot of stronger steroids into my right eye. Hopefully, they will clear up soon. @Cindy, my sugar too has jumped up a bit lately. It bounces between 100 and 110. I've put on a lot of weight since transplant, and need to lose some to lower the glucose levels.

Comment by Cindy Franklin on June 14, 2012 at 1:23pm Bobbie - sure am thankful to be alive. Haven't talked to transplant coordinator about these issues - maybe I should.

Comment by bobbie c on June 14, 2012 at 12:43pm cindy, the vision and thyroid thing seems pretty common. not everyone gets it but i do think prograf messes with alot in your body. i never had problems with either until transplant. all kinds of things seem to pop up. we gotta make the best of it. we are still here eh? good luck

Comment by Cindy Franklin on June 14, 2012 at 12:14pm Hi everyone. I had liver transplant 2 1/2 years ago due to Alpha I Antitripson Deficiency. During the past month I have had changes with thyroid, vision, and sugar. My thyroid medication had to be decreased but it seems ok now. 3 weeks ago I had a retinal tear but still having a lot of problems with vision but no one seems to be able to tell me why. Now my sugar has jumped up and I can't seem to get it to come back down. Can not figure out what in the world is going on. Could this be a prograf issue?
Comment by Susan G. on June 13, 2012 at 11:10pm I'm so glad thatyou had a good response to treatment Penny! Take care.

Comment by Stu L on June 13, 2012 at 7:30pm Good to hear from everyone, I guess we will never be certain of the long term effects of the treatment. I had a reduced TSH but nothing serious Dr. just watching. I too have blurry vision at times, not sure what to attribute it to, I was diabetic post transplant and was taking insulin for the first two years but the sugar levels seem to be almost normal so I stopped taking it. My AIC is within range, so I don't think it's comforting to know that others have had similar issues.

Comment by bobbie c on June 13, 2012 at 6:46pm penny, i am also still having problems with thyroid since finishing treatment that i had never had before.my vision has also been affected, it is kind of blurry when i get on my pc for too long or watch tv too long. that was never a problem before.i think it may be a combination. the interferon brings it on and the prograf keeps it going. oh well, we are better off than we were before just making the best of things. take care sweetie

Comment by A. Front on June 13, 2012 at 6:10pm Congrats Penny. It's always good news when someone is SVR.
Stu~ I did 24 weeks of tx, after becoming und at 4 weeks. As a genotype 2, my chances of success were good.
There are possible long term effects of interferon treatment.
Unfortunately information is lacking other than ancedotal.
What I can tell you is try to stay as active as possible and drink lots of water.
Good luck in freeing yourself of the virus.

Comment by Penny on June 13, 2012 at 6:07pm Thanks. The treatment for Hep C knocked my thyroid out of whack. I was told it would go back to normal after treatment, but it never did. I've also had problems with my eyes. My retina almost detached, but luckily, it went back on its own. That is one rare side effect. I did get cysts on my retina, though, that interferes with my vision. I think that is from the treatment, but my transplant coordinator wonders if it's from the Prograf.

Comment by Stu L on June 12, 2012 at 7:04pm Penny, Thanks for sharing you give me hope to conquer this virus.
