My doc says absolutely no way! But, someone I know has a double lung transplant and got tattooed after. She says that as long as 1. you bring your own needle and 2. you make sure the paint hoses are new, you will be OK.

Anyone else here have tattoos that they got after their transplant that can provide advice?

i talked to my transplant team and they said ok who did you think i talked to a circus i am very careful with what i do with my body and if i was getting a tattoo i would tell my doctor and see what they have to say first but they werent against it they just have to tell you the risks

I wanted to get a small tattoo but my doctors at UCLA said no way also. Even thought the one I wanted was very small, an ankh about an inch tall. Like Nelson's doc's, they were concerned about possible transmission of hepatitis and other things and also possible infection. Oh well, I can live with that! :)

FIRST TAT TO COMMEMERATE MY TRANSPLANT POST 5+ YEAR MARK! GETTING ANOTHER FOR MY BIRTHDAY THIS MONTH TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER YEAR. GLAD I DID IT, NO HEALING PROBLEMS, CLEAN ARTIST AND SUPPLIES.

I wish I found this site sooner. I am 3yrs post tx (liver) and yes, I have had three additional pieces done since, by different Artists, including my Daughter. The first rule for a Tattoo Artist is hygenics. ALL equipment must be kept clean and sterile. Neddles should come out of a brand new pkg. If your last blood work is good,(no Hep C or immune problems), go for it. You only live once and marking your body with Art draws the attention away from the scars.

I wanted to get a tattoo as well after transplant but my doctors said absolutely not. Too much bacteria on the skin, even tho it would be sterilized. I would love to get just one but I can live without it. Hee Hee :)

I had my liver transplant in 2005 and already had a tattoo and belly button piercing. My doctors told me not to get anymore but I constantly asked them every time I had clinic. Finally I was told I could get pierced as long as it was not through cartilage, and I could get tattooed as long as I went to a shop that I knew was clean and sterile. So I now have 3 tattoos and 4 piercings (not including ears). I was glad I got the "green light". I love tattoos and I also wanted to get one to commemorate my transplant. Ha ha the only issue I have now is when I go for my MRIs and have to take out all my jewelery :)

Basically, if you want one just make sure the instruments and shop are clean and sterile (you see the artist open up the new needle package). Every shop that I have been in pre or post tx have always sterilized and opened new equipment in front of me..I don't know, that's just my two cents lol

Paint in Tattoo Ink ? Sounds like your Dr. is lost in time.30-40yrs ago, some tattoo ink did contain traces of lead.
Nowadays, the vast selection of colors and scrutiny by Industry Professionals has insured Harmless,Non-Toxic Inks, some of which are made of organic materials. The only risk comes from home-made Tats, made with Indio Ink, or cigarette ashes(jailhouse style).
